Ecologic® SMILE
We are developing an oral product that improves and maintains a healthy oral microbiota and prevents gingivitis. A large quantity of probiotic strains have been tested for their inhibition of the growth of well-known oral pathogens (for instance Streptococcus mutans) at the university of Leuven, Belgium. Currently, several product formulations are being tested and we are looking for the most suitable application form. Additionally, an in vivo trial will be conducted when the formulation is finalized.
Ecologic® BARRIER
Research has shown that a decreased barrier function can lead to several health problems, such as obesity, diabetes type 1 and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, we are developing a new probiotic product that focuses on the intestinal barrier function. A large quantity of strains has been screened at an independent research institute in Germany for their potential capacity to improve the intestinal barrier function. Furthermore, also other active ingredients will be screened for their capacity to increase probiotic activity and their effect on barrier function. Based on the results Winclove will develop a new combination product including both the probiotics and other interesting ingredients. Subsequently, this product will be tested in vivo.
Ecologic® PANDA II
Whereas Ecologic® PANDA has shown to be effective in the prevention of eczema in newborns with a high risk for atopic disease, Ecologic® PANDA II will be developed for supplementation in children that have already the first symptoms of eczema. Winclove’s probiotic strains have been screened on several immunological parameters by the University Medical Centre in Utrecht, The Netherlands. A scientific article on this work was published. Based on the results of the individual strains, four concept products were designed, which were tested again on in vitro immune modulation. One product came out as being superior in its effect. Currently, options for a clinical study with the new formulation Ecologic® PANDA II are being investigated.
Upcoming probiotic applications
Probiotic powder supplied in jars, sachets and capsules has shown to be convenient in the past. However, today’s consumers desire a more convenient, appealing, attractive or a quicker way of consuming their probiotic food supplements. Furthermore, we know consumers appreciate the ability to choose between a number of different application forms. Therefore, we are investigating the possibilities to supply our multispecies probiotic products in other application forms than traditionally present. Tablets, gums, chewable tablets, and liquids with our probiotic bacteria are examples of what is being researched.
