Gut microbiota and gastrointestinal health: current concepts and future directions.
Intestinal microbiota in functional bowel disorders: a Rome foundation report
From 24-26 February the international event Gut Microbiota for health has taken place in Madrid. The latest advances in the field of gut microbiota research were presented during this conference. Two studies from Winclove abut Ecologic Barrier were selected for poster presentations.
Babies who are born by Cesarean delivery have an increased risk to develop allergies later in life compared to infants delivered vaginally. This was concluded by Canadian researchers investigating the influence of Cesarean delivery and formula feeding on the gut microbiota. The study backs up evidence for probiotics, like Ecologic Panda, to play an assenstial role in acquiring a diverse gut microbiota which is essential to human health throughout life.
Ecologic® Performance: The first probiotic product aimed to reduce exercise related gastro-intestinal complaints.
Regular exercise has many known health benefits. However, athletes who are exposed to high-intensity exercise such as runners and triathletes, are also familiar with the disadvantages of intensive exercise. They frequently experience gastro-intestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting diarrhea, intestinal cramps and are more susceptible to infection.
The newly developed multispecies probiotic Ecologic® performance has been specifically developed to restore the intestinal barrier function and reduce exercise associated adverse effects. It has been proven effective in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Read more
Recently it has become evident that the microbiota can influence gut-brain communication, brain function and even behaviour. The involvement of the intestinal microbiota in the gut-brain axis suggests that modulation on this microbiota with probiotics may provide novel treatment strategies for complex nervous system disorders and stress related GI disorders. Modulating microbiota-gut brain axis communication is emerging as an exciting new concept in health and disease. Winclove currently offers two products to fit this concept, Ecologic Performance and Ecologic Barrier.
This was the main result of a recent research. The parents of 160 infants collected faeces samples of their infants and kept a diary on how many minutes their baby cried. The microbiota in the faeces of the babies who cried the most were compared with the babies who cried the least. The microbiota was significantly different.
Probiotics have the potential to restore a healthy intestinal microbiota and therefore it is likely that probiotics are beneficial for colicky infants.
This year the scientific commitee of the 8th Annual Conference of the European Nutraceutical Association selected the poster of Winclove's scientist Saskia van Hemert (middle in the picture) as one of the price-winning posters. We are very proud of this acknowledgement or our research. You can find the poster and abstract here.
