Research opportunities

When you are interested in conducting (pilot) studies or research with probiotics, Winclove could be an interesting partner. We have over 20 years of experience in developing, testing, and producing probiotic formulations in an open collaboration with various research institutes and academic hospitals.

We have over 20 years of experience in developing, testing, and producing probiotic formulations in an open collaboration with various top research institutes, universities and hospitals. With most of these institutes we perform in vitro, ex vivo or in vivo research with individual bacterial strains or different probiotic formulations. It is also possible to develop new formulations suiting your research.

We are looking for partners to collaborate in research projects, clinical trials, or we can perform in vitro studies in our own laboratory with bacterial strains.

 Research projects

We have strong R&D cooperations with leading Dutch universities and universities abroad. In several cases this cooperation is subsidized through national or European funds. At the moment we are cooperating in several large research projects with research partners as well as commercial partners. These projects are mainly focused on fundamental and/or mechanistic research. We are interested in the management of the intestinal microbiota by probiotics. Read more about our current research projects.

In vitro studies

sequencenWe have our own laboratory where, besides quality and stability analyses on our products, in vitro experiments can be performed. In addition, we perform a lot of in vitro experiments in cooperation with several research partners because of their expertise in for instance immunology or gut integrity. In vitro experiments are performed on both the individual strains and final product and are an important factor in the process of product development.

Examples of in vitro studies:

  • Survival through the gastro-intestinal tract
  • Inhibition of specific pathogenic bacteria
  • Influence on cytokine production or other immune parameters
  • Production of metabolites, (e.g. lactic acid), etc.
  • Influence on intestinal barrier function

Bacterial strains

We have over 100 individual probiotic strains. Most of them are well characterized in terms of:

  • Gastro-intestinal survival
  • Antibiotic resistance
  • Cytokine induction (or inhibition)
  • Biological activity
  • Inhibition of pathogens

Clinical trials

We are involved in several clinical trials, both open pilot studies as well as double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized studies. These studies are performed in cooperation with several research partners, mainly academic hospitals, in the Netherlands, but also elsewhere in Europe. These trials are performed to support the efficacy of our products, especially products designed for a specific application.

Examples of (finished) studies:

  • Prevention of allergy; Probiotics AND Allergy (PANDA) study; in cooperation with the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital and Wageningen University.
  • Prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea; in cooperation with the University hospital Maastricht.
  • Extension of the remission time in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis); in cooperation with university hospital Maastricht and university hospital Linkoping.
  • Reduction of symptoms in constipation; in cooperation with the university hospital Amsterdam.
